Living off The Grid

The growing trend for “living off the grid” is breeding a new type of intelligent traveller using often quite novel transport ideas to follow his, her or their dream.

Such travellers are tired of living chained to a job which gives little personal satisfaction often using employment income to do little more than survive from day to day in an increasingly complex world.

We have been impressed by some of the stories of those who have taken the challenge and transformed their lives without costing a fortune in hard currency.

A selection of such individuals follows:

Vandog Traveller probably comes close to fitting the historic profile of a “New Age ” traveller but there is a considerable difference in his approach and experiences of his new life from buying a used LDV van, converting it to a high specification camper Van and commencing his journey.

His website is packed with information not only about how Mike set about the van conversion but also his travel story and places visited!

Wandering Footsteps is another but different story of a nomadic couple on a slow overland trip around the world. With thirty years of travel experience between us and a round-the-world trip already under the belt of our trusty 1988 Toyota-cum-camper van.

The journey proves to be interesting and packed with reality and the story and articles often written with humour. Brittany and Bruno continue to report on their trials and tribulations.

Pamthevan puts the female perspective forward and her very clever small Renault van conversion gives food for thought. Her travels with her large dog Odie make for interesting reading.

Her ideas for a small van conversion turn normal thought process upside down. Most of us think we need a big high top van but she proves that small can be effective and fun!
